You are in a community thats not only sports crazy, but very community minded, the Packers, the Badgers, the Bucks are all very community involved. Lasry and Feigin met some 20 years ago when Feigin's identical twin brother, Daniel, was coaching Lasry's sons Alex and Zach for an elementary school basketball team in New York City.. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? Youve done it all. There was a collective effort on you guys to really, really embrace the city. In all, about 100 players have played in The Run over the decades, some more luminous than others. But this is literally a business based on humans and psychology and emotion and how we feel every day. Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? John: Go back over that, what it was called typically whats called web3 now, or something the young people around me tell me its called web 3.0 NFTs, crypto sports gambling. I think it changes the landscape. Michael Red: Peter Feigin. How do we talk beyond just coming to Milwaukee, but how do we do business together? John: No question. Peter Feigin: And I'm digging into the business, and I had no desire to run it or to move to Milwaukee. When I was looking at the website, I was like, man, I cant wait to taste that chicken. Because I talked with the Lakers guys, I talked with the Boston guys on what they had, did. But that kind of thing. Its not really in a place where I could tell you, like, hey, heres our growth potential. Can you keep a competitive championship-caliber team across an era? Hes with us today. Peter Feigin: And you've got to put with everything going on in the world, there's got to be that balance of like, "Hey, there are priorities." I heard or to make the statement, are you the employee of the month? So, that part of it was awesome. Peter Feigin: I think building the relationship with Mark, probably through looking at other purchase opportunities and kind of talking through it. But the best way to talk about is like I'd rather throw the pass than hit the shot. We hired a great human capital person to build up the structure, but it was really best practice. And that's tough, too. Please talk about the Cluckery because this is so much fun and I wanted you to share your whole, the vision and how this all came about. From 2006-2014, the Bucks only made the postseason twice in eight seasons. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. Unfortunately, I probably haven't changed mentally or emotionally since we met, but she's my teammate. Crazy story of how things happened. And nobody's going to question how great Milwaukee is." John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? And that's kind of like you do it with great people around you. Michael Red: It's been wonderful to watch. It was one of these terrible times where, when youre in pro sport, you book all your revenue, you do all your dirty business before tip-off and if they didnt have somebody to run the business in July, it wouldve been a disaster and they were stuck with me and thats my road to success. Give Light and the People Will Find Their Own Way. Its been talked about the whole Giannis effect. Well, a year ago, yesterday, we went to zero. So when I talked to her, I said, hey, Ive got to tell you, first of all, the executive committee at Saturday morning run says, this is a good thing. It was kind of like take a weekend and moonlight into a fun job. Peter Feigin: I think we have a good structure with Jon Horst, who's really our GM and kind of really runs the basketball day-to-day. Peter: which I cant even believe it, Id probably have some fun teaching. You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." Peter is a native New Yorker. Thats the relentless, thats the difference I think of what success is. Peter Feigin: Well, long story short, like, six years ago, he calls me and he says, "Hey, can you get to Milwaukee to go meet with Senator Kohl. Michael Red: That's great advice. My wife and I have known each other since high school. Team president Peter Feigin and his wife each contributed $2,900, while Feigin's brother Daniel contributed $600. And I knew who Arthur Ashe was, but I wasn't a big tennis guy and my job was basically being Arthur Ashe's right hand person through. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. You start with whats the goal? We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. Peter Feigin: And how do you rethink your strategies for retail? So, just being a part of that, I mean, I know it sounds crazy. We pivoted and our kids were able to finish high school in New York and we made it work and now weve been Wisconsin residents from New York City, which is a whole other interesting transition. Peter: got to do what youre going to say and say what youre going to do and really be substantial. I mean, nobody understands like players have a handful of days off the entire season. We have the DNA and the strength and this caliber of championship caliber team to really be attractive to the world. John: Thats so great. The ability to go into an NBA franchise and really pick all the great practices which is going around in the league is a huge advantage. Sometimes it goes up for judicial review to make sure the run is harmonious, Lee said. Peter Feigin: I mean, just different ways, we started to think about doing this. What has it meant to you to bet on yourself? He's going to sell the team. Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. It so happens Bucks co-owners Marc Lasry and Wes Edens sent their children to Trevor Day. Do you want to open a sports book? While Feigin can watch Antetokounmpo and the Bucks any time he wants on NBA 2K or social media -- "The truth is our digital channels are ten times like what our local broadcasts are," he says -- he has the distinct pleasure in Milwaukee of actually getting to catch the action in person. Peter: Im fairly, my mom was immersed in data analytics before data and analytics was business intelligence. Peter: Yeah. We scaled the company up to, a little bit under a billion dollars. I'm just honored and grateful that you took the time to be on the cast today, man. We're not an organization that splits up into silos of business or basketball. John: Unbelievable. And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." Peter: Yeah, so I think its here and I think its all about the customization, right. Peter Feigin readily admits that, as president of the Milwaukee Bucks, he lives in the fantasy world of professional sports. He really taught me the lesson late in life is the real geniuses or the ones who can take these complex things and talk to me about them and I understand them. Weve had Giannis invest in the brewers, which is like. Peter: My wifes a native New Yorker. So that that's been kind of part of my learning is like, "How do we create a system that we're in a much better place six months from now and a much better place 12 months and a much better place three years from now that we've shown change in metrics and results and everything like that. Peter Feigin: Yeah. I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. Peter: Hes was in consumer products. Feigin's first task was evident right away. Michael Red: So, the Recruiter became the President basically? I've known Jon for, I don't know, 13, 14 years, and to see what he's done with the team as the general manager has been really impressive. Peter: We knew each other. I suggested a lot of people who would be great presidents, and lo and behold, none of them worked out to do it, so I think they had to default to me to run the company.". One Thursday night he gave me a call and said, Do you think you can go to Milwaukee and talk to Senator Herb Call. That the only option we really had was to build grassroots and build relationships and take time across the entire community. And as Marc kind of ventured out over a decade ago . Peter Feigin: Michael, like I said, anytime, anywhere. I mean, I probably publicly spoke for the first time in my life 100 times in the first 200 days to everybody from Lions Clubs to the barber shop, to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts to kind of preach how big a deal it is for city this size to have and keep an NBA team. She's terrific and just the whole organization and I'm honored to be a part of the family, man. John: Another native New Yorker from Roslyn, New York. Yes, we are shiny toy people want to see how you build a project in time and under budget and how youd manage a project. And the family went into the most unique times that we've ever seen in our lifetime a year ago. Some people dont like to hear that anymore. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. Youre unbelievably inspirational. Michael Red: I know the whole organization showed a ton of grit from ownership to yourself, to management and players, even losing the Democratic National Convention last year. And I think he's going to sell the team. The building will also be the focal point of a 30-acre development in downtown Milwaukee, an urban revitalization project that Feigin believes in. John: Right. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Then Chris Middleton next to him, which is almost the same, who are these high quality character folks who happen to be all stars in skill level. I think that was a necessity. You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. Anybody who wants to joust with me or do anything, I was like, "Well, just tell me where you're against the equality. Peter Feigin: So, it was kind of crazy. Then I think as we keep exploring and kind of whats happening with online gambling and whats happening with NFTs and whats happening in the ticketing business, that it all evolves with technology, will be really interesting. His brother and Lee were just as excited. I became the president of the company for a number of years, and then we got absorbed by NetJets and took on that role at NetJets for a couple of years, and really learned incredibly, had this opportunity to learn P&L and operational. And then we kind of sat there until like, "Oh, my God." I think it starts with human capital, but it really starts with road mapping out each little thing. I think thats like fair. And we want to attract people who want to be in that mode. It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. So, we see this great opportunity to lead by example and then to almost market and promote it as this should be more the norm than not the norm in a big way. Peter: How do we envision the next day? A decades-long Manhattan pickup basketball game is on hold because of the pandemic, creating an emotional void for its rotating cast of actors, executives and regular joes. I took great pride in seeing the development of downtown and what you guys were doing with the city. He's Peter Feigin, president of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, and in the nearly five years of living in the city he has come to Gee's Clippers so that Gaulien Smith, a black man, can tame his head. With your owners and partners and this great group of people you put together, whats the future look like for the Bucks and what can some of the fans expect in the upcoming season?
