Review: In Beach Rats, Life and Sexuality in Limbo, https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/24/movies/beach-rats-review.html, Harris Dickinson, center, in Eliza Hittmans second feature, Beach Rats.. Directed by Eliza Hittman. I don't feel comfortable explaining the extent to which I could connect with so much of what was depicted here, but I assure you that so many details were pulled right from reality, down to the fear in meeting up with a new hookup and the awkwardness of first sex. Beach Rats was my most anticipated of the year, and at this point, I'd say it's the best. Hittman lures us in with glistening washboard torsos and designer ennui, and, without ever resorting to moral judgement, asks the simple question over and over: hey kid, what are you doing with your life? The Brooklyn summer of Eliza Hittmans superb second feature is an endless fairground ride of cheap highs and long, dragging, wasted moments. British newcomer Harris Dickinson convinces as a Brooklyn delinquent A film about homosexuality made for heterosexuals, 'Beach Rats' neatly fits the tired and restrictive 'LGBT' label by conforming to many of its trademarks, such as self-loathing and confused gay men that simply wish to belong, gays being betrayed by other gays, gays getting beat up, macho blokes, predictable plots and clichd characters, nudity, homoerotic soft-porn visuals and drug taking. I dont know what I like, he mumbles. Frankie and his boys bask like lizards, shirtless and heavy-lidded as they eye the girls on the beach. Beach Rats is most compelling when it puts a self-aware focus on Dickinsons sculpted male figure: From the very first frame, Frankie engages in self-objectification, as the strobing flash of an iPhone camera reflects off his bathroom mirror in an image that encapsulates both the sensual appeal of the film and the intent of its aesthetic overall. (Like Ms. Hittmans first feature, It Felt Like Love, Beach Rats doubles as a portrait of Brooklyns southern-shore neighborhoods, lyrically photographed by Hlne Louvart.). Beach Rats is weary and jaded, just like its protagonist Frankie (Harris Dickinson). There are similarities between the two because they are both about male youths coming to terms with their sexuality and NYT Critic's Pick. Beach Rats presents the walls closing in on Frankie, but the audience only gets to see what those walls look like at the very last moment. I dont really know what I like is a recurring line spoken by closeted 19-year-old Frankie, the protagonist of Eliza Hittmans Beach Rats, and while the words are a shield of armor the boy wears, they also speak a truth greater than he probably even knows. 4/5stars4 out of 5 stars. Hittman shares something of Claire Deniss gift for finding vulnerability in a chiselled male body and a kind of bruised poetry in the tough-guy swagger of these teenage kids. If Beach Rats is full of quiet moments, then its the films sex scenes that constitute the brunt of the films dramatic action. Menu "beach rats" Purchase This Movie. The website's critical consensus reads, "Empathetic and powerfully acted, Beach Rats takes a clear-eyed yet dreamlike look at a young man's adolescent turmoil." Its gutted state, not without emotion but with it overwhelmed by ravenous hopelessness, is perfectly earned. The film is frankly voyeuristic, sometimes objectifying, but it's an appreciative objectification, reminiscent of This point, I 'd say it 's the best they don t be easily resolved film Assured enough to know it can t know what I like, he mumbles easy this review may contain spoilers I don t know I!, but only solid flick a cramped house in Brooklyn with his father!
